Farming Done Right

My summers in South Dakota looking for nighthawks led me past many farms of many types. What yielded more nighthawks? I didn’t need to crunch the numbers to see it (but I did). It turns out that farms with row crops were devoid of grassland birds. But, small farms, especially if they contained multiple landscapes or crops seemed to have more biodiversity. This study, confirmed my observation.

Another observation? In the face of overwhelming grassland loss, sometimes cattle ranches offered a refuge for grassland birds.
